FLOHS plant islands are branded products handmade in Germany.
The living island
- Creation of new habitats for insects, above and below water.

PLANT ISLAND DETAILS
- We, the FLOHS company, have been producing the floating plant island since 2001. It is a branded product manufactured in Germany whose production involves many individual steps.
- Our plant island consists of three components:
- base material (support mat)
- buoyancy body (load bearing + shaping)
- protective net (root protection+ shaping)
- None of the processed products releases foreign substances into the water. All the protective nets used are washed before processing.
- The material is winterproof and non-rotting.
- Many shapes and sizes can be made up.
- The nutrient uptake of the island planting (repositioning plants) is directly from the water and this without substrate.
- The plants firmly grow together with the support mat and the protective net located in the water. This gives additional stability.
- The load-bearing capacity of the islands is high, but they are expressly designed for planting only low to medium-high repositioning plants.
Handling
- You will need: Plant island, mounting kit, reposition plants, scissors, stones and pole (or landing net).
- For orientation: The net side is on the water and therefore down.
- Consider where you want the island to float in your pond (not in close proximity to the skimmer) and whether you want the island to stand in one place or move around in a certain radius. Leave the cord of the attachment set long accordingly.
- Pull the end of the cord through the net (below the island) and tie the cord to the base mat.
- For weighting, fill the net bag with a few round stones.
- Now place the island with the net side down on the water surface and slowly let the fastening bag sink to the bottom of the pond.
- Press the island once briefly under water.
- Now you can distribute the reposition plants on the island in such a way that the high growing plants (grasses) are in the middle of the island and the low growing plants are in the edge area.
- Simply place the reposition plants on the vegetation side of the island. Please DO NOT incorporated / push into the mat!
- Use a pole (landing net) to push the island into the desired position. Pay attention to the bottom drainage.
- The plants need some time to grow. Make sure that the root balls always remain moist.
- In autumn take the island out of the water and shorten the plants and roots to 10 cm.
- That following put the island back on the water. It can freeze! In spring the vegetation will grow again.
- We strongly recommend using high quality repositioning plants. When choosing the type of plants, the following applies: “Many grasses and few flowering plants are good for the water; many flowering plants are beautiful to the eye”.
Assortment
Since 2001 we have been handcrafting each of our plant islands individually, in Germany, in eight production steps. All components come from Germany and are specially designed for use in water.
When we developed them, our goal was to enrich the swamp-free koi ponds with a natural filtering effect. At that time we had no idea that the effect of our floating plant islands would be so much greater and that the areas of application would extend beyond the koi pond.

A FLOHS plant island will give you many years of enjoyment as it will not rot or “freeze” in winter. It works like a marsh zone but without polluting the water. We always recommend to fix the island with a fixing set and to equip it with repositioning plants. From our experience, it pays to bet on the quality of the plants.
Due to the individual production it is possible to produce many special shapes and sizes. Our stock program includes eleven plant islands of different shapes and sizes. We recommend the round islands for the middle area and the angular ones for the shore zone.
When choosing the island size, be sure to consider the size of your water surface. The bigger the island is, the bigger the effect will be. Therefore, we can say: too big rarely exists, too small very often. Of course, you can also connect different islands.
